St. John Vianney Catholic School is a community united by our Catholic faith. Since our founding in 1954, we have remained committed to serving the mind, body, and spirit grounded in the Gospel values.

Our doors opened in September 1954, when Father Fred Cook and the Sisters of the Presentation founded the school with six classrooms and a vision for Catholic education in the Foothills of East San Jose. Just three years later, in 1957, we celebrated our first graduating class. Since then we’ve proudly graduated over 4,300 students, each one a testament to the lasting impact of a St. John Vianney education.

Through the decades, we have grown and expanded to meet the needs of our growing school and students.Originally starting with six classrooms in 1954, we quickly expanded to include eight additional classrooms and a library in 1961. A dedicated Kindergarten and Extended Care Center was added in 1993, which allowed us to complete our comprehensive curriculum in 2018 with the addition of our Transitional Kindergarten (TK) class. In 2012, we proudly opened our school gym, creating a space for school athletics, events, and community gatherings.

Most recently, we completed renovations to our main building during the pandemic and installed a synthetic turf field in 2024. We have made enhancements to our campus to better support the students' learning, growth and sense of community for years to come.

The Mission of St. John Vianney Catholic School

Grounded in our Catholic faith, St. John Vianney Catholic School is dedicated to teaching and living Gospel values. In partnership with families, parish, and community, we cultivate a safe, loving, and diverse environment where children build a strong academic foundation, contribute positively, and learn and grow in their Catholic faith.

Our Philosophy

St. John Vianney Catholic School is committed to the educational ministry of the Roman Catholic Church. We strive to form a community of self-directed learners who focus on Gospel values, experience spiritual growth, demonstrate academic excellence, and live as Christian stewards. We believe a Catholic education transforms students’ lives when:

  • Each child is called to grow in faith by learning about, exploring, and modeling the teachings of Jesus Christ.

  • Children are provided with an educational experience that promotes spiritual, academic, and physical well-being, and validates uniqueness.

  • Teachers facilitate academic excellence, critical thinking, and technological competence, enabling students to be responsible individuals.

  • The family and school work in partnership to support children as they become vital members of the Catholic Church in local and global communities.

  • The school integrates Catholic values and social justice into the curriculum.

We are a community who believes in providing a quality Catholic education for our children. In partnership with our parents, faculty and staff strive to support our students in a safe and welcoming space-- where school and personal life is valued and respected — where students will become empowered to effect change in their community and the world.
